Spring Valley ParkIn August 2007, Parks and Recreation  joined with Procurement Services and began the proposal process for the Playground Replacement Program.  After careful review of those proposals, Cunningham Associates, Incorporated was selected and the construction of 17 playgrounds around Kansas City began.  In celebration, Mayor Mark Funkhouser would like you to join him, and local children, as we dedicate the new Spring Valley Park playground, E. 27th Street and Woodland Avenue, on Tuesday, June 10, at 4:30 pm. 

Other new playgrounds include: Northeast Athletic Fields, Essex Park, Waterwell Athletic Complex, North Congress Greenway, Prospect Plaza Park, Lykins Park, Spring Valley Park, Indiana Park, Blues Park, Cypress Park, The Grove Park, Gage Park, Arletta Park, Swope Park, Skiles Park, Iser Park and Dunn Park  
 
All of these new playgrounds offer fitness, socialization and recreational opportunities and are designed and appropriate for children ages 2 through 12.  So get out and play, Kansas City!!!

Pool PartyKansas City area kids will party at pools this summer thanks to Free Swim Pool Parties presented by Children's Mercy Family Health Partners, KCWE Channel 29 and the KCMO Parks and Recreation Department.  The parties run from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm and will feature pool activities, contests, prizes, and healthy snacks.  Families will learn about the importance of diet and exercise to prevent or overcome childhood obesity and diabetes.  They will also learn how to make their own healthy snacks.  Join us at the following locations for these FREE pool parties:

Heart of America Shakespeare Festival

Shakespeare Fest picLooking for something fun, FREE and outdoors?  Join us at Southmoreland Park, Emanuel Clever II Blvd. and Oak Street,  for the annual Heart of America Shakespeare Festival running June 17 through July 6.  This years production, Othello, is one of Shakepeare's greatest tragedies and a play that has not been professionally produced in Kansas City in more than two decades.  Gates open at 6:00 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, with pre-entertainment each night.  Othello begins at 8:00 pm.  Bring out your blankets or lawn chairs and experience Shakespeare in the park!!!  For more information on the festival, click here!!
